Getting Licenced / Safety Courses / Holster Proficiency

The following steps will guide you through the process;

Rifle Licence Category A & B

  • Step 1.  Genuine Reason.

You will need a genuine reason to obtain a Category A & B Firearms Licence.  If you become a Member of SSAA you can then list your genuine reason as Sports & Target Shooting and Recreation & Hunting.  SSAA Rockhampton Branch Q07 is an Approved Club with Category A and B endorsement under the Weapons Act.

Anyone who is already a Q07 member can help you or contact SSAA Rockhampton Q07 or your local SSAA Branch.

Remember to nominate your Membership Branch as Q07.

As it takes time for your SSAA Membership Card to arrive, and you need proof of Membership of an Association to apply for a licence, we suggest you Join Now.

  • Step 2.  Rifle Safety Course.

Contact your nearest SSAA Branch Safety Course Instructor, and book in for a 10618NAT Course in Firearms Safety.  Note bookings are essential for a safety course.

(The State Office can also assist you to contact a SSAA Safety Course Instructor in your area.)

All SSAA (Qld) Inc. Instructors have attained the Certificate 4 in Workplace Training and Assessment.

Our Branch Project Manager, Darryl Porteous, and Branch President, Grant Nolan, are State Qualified Firearms Instructors and conduct Firearm Safety Courses for Firearm Licence Categories: A, B, C, D and H.  You are required to make a booking for a position on the safety course, as numbers are limited, and places fill quickly each month.

Contact Darryl ph 0447 121 951 (only Mon-Fri, 2.00-5.00 pm.  If unattended please leave a message) or Email darrylporteous1@bigpond.com

  • Step 3.  Documents.

When you have completed your Safety Course you will be posted a 'Statement of Attainment'. This is your proof that you have successfully completed the Safety Course. A copy of this will be needed when you apply for your licence. While you are waiting for this to arrive go to your nearest photo shop and have 2 passport size photos taken, as these will have to be supplied with your application.

  • Step 4.  Apply.

When you have everything you need, go either 'on-line' or to the Police Station nearest you, to apply.

If attending the Police Station, ask for an 'Application for a License' Form 1 and a 'Proof of Identity' Form 30, or download them from the Queensland Police Service Website. Fill these in and pay the fees, the police station will then send them to Weapons Licensing Branch where they will be processed.

Have patience, as they will only be processed after 28 days.

  • Step 5.  Permit to Acquire.

When your licence arrives, you can then decide which firearm best suits your needs. Different types (we call them Disciplines) of shooting require different types of firearms, so try all the Disciplines that your Branch has, then decide on the firearm you want - don't make a hasty decision.

Apply for a Permit to Acquire either 'on-line' or at your nearest Police Station.

Handgun Licence Category H

  • Step 1.  'Eligible' Membership of a Pistol Club (Club Approval with a Category H endorsement).

Obtaining a handgun license is different to the steps you needed to get your rifle licence (Category A, B).  Just being an unattached member of SSAA (Q00) is not enough, you need to be an 'eligible' member of a SSAA Branch with a Category H endorsement (Weapons Act Approved Club with a Category H endorsement). SSAA Rockhampton Branch Q07 has a Category H Club Approval from Weapons Licensing Branch.

If you do not already have an A,B Weapons Licence and you want to only obtain a Cat H licence, then you have to go to the Police Station and ask for a 'Pre Approval' application form, Form Q515. You fill this in and lodge it at the Police Station. Weapons Licensing Branch will process the form and send you back a letter authorising you.

Check the Weapons Licensing site.    https://www.police.qld.gov.au/weapon-licensing/concealable-licence-target-shooting

  • Step 2.  Participation.

When the letter comes back, and you have already joined the SSAA Branch with a Cat H endorsement, then you are now on probation for 6 months. During this probation time you have to attend a minimum of 3 Branch Competition Shoots, these shoots will be recorded on your Participation Record Card that the Branch will issue you, on request, when you first attend a pistol shoot.

  • Step 3.  Pistol Safety Course.

At any time within the 6 months you can do a Weapons Act Safety Pistol Course, and then when your 6 months probation is up, you can apply for your Cat H license.

Our Branch Project Manager, Darryl Porteous, and Branch President, Grant Nolan, are State Qualified Firearms Instructors and conduct Firearm Safety Courses for Firearm Licence Categories: A, B, C, D and H.  The pistol safety course sessions are held only as demand requires.  You are required to make a booking for a position on the pistol safety course.  Contact Darryl ph 0447 121 951 (only Mon-Fri, 2.00-5.00 pm.  If unattended please leave a message.) or Email darrylporteous1@bigpond.com

  • Step 4.  Apply.

Apply either 'on-line' or at your nearest Police Station.  After you have submitted your application form, it will be processed after 28 days plus additional processing time. So have patience.

  • Step 5.  Permit to Acquire.

Enjoy your sport.  Apply for a Permit to Acquire either 'on-line' or at your nearest Police Station.

Holster Proficiency

Holster Proficiency Course sessions are held only as demand requires.  You are required to make a booking for a position on the holster proficiency course.  Contact Darryl ph 0447 121 951 (only Mon-Fri, 2.00-5.00 pm.  If unattended please leave a message.) or Email darrylporteous1@bigpond.com
